‘No support for small businesses’: Calgary Chamber unimpressed with budget

After looking over the Alberta budget, the Calgary Chamber of Commerce says there’s little to nothing in it to support small business.

The province left its two per cent tax on small businesses unchanged.

The Chamber says that places a burden on small-business owners and stifles employment growth.

The Chamber has been lobbying the province to completely eliminate it.

According to the Chamber, 95 per cent of Alberta’s economy is in small business, and it says the budget does nothing to address the needs of that sector.

“There’s no support for small businesses, and we know that small businesses are really important to the Alberta economy,” said Deborah Yedlin, Chamber president and CEO.

“So, we would like to see that small-business tax eliminated.

“We’ve been asking for that consistently. We’re going to still keep asking for it because we really need to make sure that everybody’s got, you know, that there’s an equal playing field.”

Saskatchewan recently cut its small-business tax to one per cent.

Manitoba has completely eliminated its small-business tax.
