A pedestrian died after being pinned under a vehicle during a crash in the northeast community of Pineridge on Wednesday.
Police responded to the intersection of Rundlehorn Drive and 26 Avenue N.E. around 1:45 p.m. for a reported collision involving a pedestrian.
The Calgary Fire Department confirmed one person died at the scene.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.
The Calgary police collision reconstruction unit arrived and closed off the road in all four directions as investigators began placing evidence markers on the ground.
Neighbours who live nearby said they’re devastated, with some describing this as a problem intersection.
“I think it was last year, or maybe two years ago, there was a vehicle that flew through the entire intersection and actually went airborne and into another house just right there,” Josiah Davis, who lives nearby, said.
“There are cars speeding by all the time, a lot of people don’t stop at this intersection. At nighttime you’ll hear cars roaring by, it’s a pretty bad intersection.”
Dylan Cole, another nearby resident, said he’s never seen anyone hit at the intersection, but there have been close calls.
“It’s just very unfortunate because it’s been bad for a long time, and it’s been reported for a long time, and nothing’s been done, so it’s really sad that this is how it has to go,” Cole said.
The road was closed for several hours as crews investigated but was reopened around 4:45 p.m.
