It’s believed the slayings of two young children—allegedly by their own father—happened outside Calgary. Originally, the location of the offence was noted in court documents as “at or near Calgary.” Prior to the accused’s most recent appearance in court, it was changed to “at or near a location between Calgary, Alberta, and Revelstoke, British Columbia.” Investigators believe the man murdered his children shortly before midnight on April 29, then brought the bodies to police in northwest Calgary 10 hours later. On the morning of April 30, police said they were dealing with “a serious incident” at 14 Street north of John Laurie Boulevard N.W. They said the children, a five-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl, were found dead inside a vehicle near the turnoff into the District 3 police station. The man was taken into custody at the scene and later charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Police said he’s the one who called them, and that he confessed. A publication ban was brought forward by the Crown to protect the identities of the victims. By extension, it also covers the identity of the accused. ‘Substantive steps’ anticipated The accused’s most recent appearance in court, via CCTV on Thursday, was brief. The matter was adjourned to Sept. 15. Defence lawyer Parker Neil, appearing for defence lawyer Clayton Rice, requested the time to allow the latter “to consider his position with respect to the replacement information.” Crown prosecutor Carla MacPhail didn’t oppose the adjournment. She requested that the accused again be present via CCTV on Sept. 15, “because we do anticipate some substantive steps.”
