Condolences over the Pope’s passing were coming in from across southern Alberta on Monday.
Bishop William McGrattan with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary has joined the bishops of Canada in mourning the death of Francis.
McGrattan says the Pope was a humble shepherd who called the church to mercy, dialogue and missionary discipleship.
“There’s a certain sadness and sorrow but I think often when we think of those that have passed, there’s a sense of gratitude for what they’ve done,” McGrattan said.
“Sometimes, the legacy and commitment they have demonstrated in their life, and especially with Pope Francis, I think many people realized his sense of humility, his compassion—he really did have a heart for those that were marginalized.”

In a statement on social media, Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen says the Pope’s “unwavering commitment to compassion, justice and unity touched hearts around the world, transcending borders and beliefs.”
“May we honour his legacy by fostering peace, kindness and understanding in our daily lives,” Hyggen said.
