‘A disagreement between roommates’: 1 dead, 1 injured in northeast Calgary shooting

Residents of the northeast Calgary community of Coral Springs are in shock after a late-night shooting left one person dead and another badly wounded.

One person is dead and another is in stable condition after an overnight shooting in the northeast Calgary community of Coral Springs.

Police say the incident happened around 10:35 p.m. at a home on Coral Springs Circle N.E.

When officers arrived, they found two men suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Both were taken to hospital, where one was later declared dead.

Chris MacPherson, who lives across the street from the home where the incident occurred, was sitting on his couch when he heard a bang.

“It was loud enough that it got my attention,” said MacPherson.

“Then I heard a woman screaming very loud.”

MacPherson ran outside and saw the woman, who he says also lives at the home, on the phone with police.

According to MacPherson, a man was sitting on a lawn chair on the front steps when police arrived shortly after.

“They approached the guy … and they had guns drawn. They said, ‘Drop your weapons,’ and I believe the guy was already obviously not a threat.

“They took him down and started compressions on him.”

Police have confirmed the shooter is believed to be the deceased individual.

“There was a disagreement between roommates inside the house, which escalated to the point of the events that occurred, which was the shooting of one person inside the house and then the second shooting of our deceased individual,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson with the Calgary police homicide unit.

According to police, there were two other people living in the home at the time.

Investigators are not looking for any other suspects.

Neighbours say they are still in shock.

“We saw ambulances, police cars, and as soon as we came out, saw some police with guns,” said Leo Shei.

“It’s scary because it’s a very peaceful community.”

“I just didn’t sleep last night,” said MacPherson.

“It’s a bad thing.”
