University of Lethbridge’s Indigenous Awareness Week kicks off, turns 50

The University of Lethbridge kicked off its Indigenous Awareness Week on Monday with a powwow and Blackfoot naming transfer ceremony.

The week is designed to embrace the spirit of reconciliation by hosting a range of activities with a focus on conversations and understanding.

This year marks the 50th that the U of L has hosted its Indigenous Awareness Week on campus.

Along with events, the Dhillon School of Business received a Blackfoot name as it celebrates 40 years of Indigenous business education.

“This is the 50th anniversary of Indigenous Awareness Week. Now, of course, that follows the accomplishments by the University of Lethbridge with regard to Indigenous relations,” said Leroy Little Bear, U of L vice-provost, Iniskim Indigenous Relations.

“A deep honour to be given a Blackfoot name that reflects the value that we place on education,” said Kerry Godfrey, Dhillon School of Business dean.

A special ceremony for the Dhillon School of Business’s anniversary is set for Friday with a teepee raising and several guest speakers.
