Tens of thousands of shampoo and conditioner products have been recalled in Canada for being potentially contaminated with a “microbial hazard.”
A release published by Health Canada on Friday said Amika products could be contaminated with bacteria called Plurabacter gergoviae, which poses a significant risk of infection to people with health problems or compromised immune systems.
Products that are recalled include the Amika Mirrorball High Shine + Protect shampoo and conditioner in several sizes that were sold between May 2023 and November 2024, including the 20 mL duo set.
The shampoo bottles in sizes 60mL, 1 L, 275 mL and 500 mL and have also been recalled, the health agency said.
The company has received 48 reports of foul odour and two reports of irritation or allergic reaction in Canada since Jan. 27, the health agency said.
The recall notice said approximately 95,000 units of the contaminated product that is manufactured in the U.S. were sold within Canada at retailers like Sephora, Walmart, Amazon, Well.ca, Evolution Beauty, Blend Box, Coastal Beauty, Industria Coiffure, Livia Beauty and Beauty Sense.
Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled product “immediately” and return it to the place of purchase where they can get a refund with proof of purchase.
