2 residential zones re-open in northwest county evacuated for wildfire

More Woodlands County residents will get to go back home Friday after an out-of-control wildfire in the area forced the evacuation of more than 100 people earlier this week.

Re-entry for those living in Zone 1, pictured below, was slated to begin as of 11 a.m. Friday at Range Road 113 and Highway 43.

County officials said they expect heavy traffic on Highway 43 and ask drivers to stay out of the area for unnecessary travel. Drivers are asked to be aware of their speed as crews work in the area.

Those living in Zone 3 were allowed to return home at 3 p.m. Thursday. The final Zone 2 was still closed as of 1 p.m. Friday.

Alberta Wildfire announced the 51-hectare fire was being held on Wednesday, although crews were still watching active hotspots, wary of spreading to the neighbouring town of Whitecourt.

The agency has since labelled the danger as moderate due to cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity, meaning wildfires are less likely to spread severely.

The county confirmed one residence was destroyed during the fire.

Woodlands County is requiring evacuees to obtain a resident pass and sign a waiver form at the Allan and Jean Millar Centre in Whitecourt or at their designated re-entry point before returning.
