Alberta group gets $600K to build eco-homes in Indigenous communities

An Alberta organization is combining education and community improvement, with help from a sizable donation.

Trade Winds to Success Training Society offers hands-on trades training for Indigenous adults. On Friday, it announced TD Canada Trust had donated $600,000 to support the Residential Construction Outreach Program.

The program will provide participants from First Nation and Métis communities with carpentry training, while they address housing needs in their communities.

Students will build small, energy-efficient homes to be transported to their home First Nations and Settlements, where they will house a community member.

A total of eight homes will be built, with 90 students training across Alberta in carpentry, project management and sustainable building practices.

Trade Winds has formerly sent homes to Gift Lake Métis Settlement, Bigstone Cree Nation, Whitefish Lake First Nation and Little Red River Cree Nation.
