We’re off to a cloudier-than-expected start to Friday in Edmonton and we may even see a couple sprinkles/light showers in parts of the area this morning. There are some small shower cells northwest of Edmonton that are tracking southeast toward Stony Plain/Edmonton. Those should be out of the Edmonton region by mid-morning and we’ll get some sun midday and early this afternoon. After today, we won’t see the sun until early next week as a low-pressure system moves in from the west. The weekend is still looking like a washout. We started June with a super soaker and this weekend could be “Super Soaker Part II.” There may be a few hours midday and early in the afternoon Saturday where it’s just cloudy with scattered showers. But, there’s heavy, steady rain expected overnight tonight and through Saturday morning. More heavy, steady rain settles over the Edmonton region Saturday evening and through most of the day Sunday. There could be a few embedded thunderstorms, but it’ll mostly be rain. Rainfall totals remain a bit uncertain, but 20-50 mm is definitely possible for both days. I think we’ll likely end up with 30-70 mm total for the weekend in the city with some neighbourhoods and surrounding areas getting closer to 100 mm. A rainfall warning has already been issued for west-central Alberta with heavy rain starting later today. We’ll probably see that warning get extended along Highway 16 right across the province either later today or Saturday. You can see on the map below that this will be a large area of heavy rain that’ll affect much of central and north-central Alberta with some of the highest potential rainfall totals in areas from around Edmonton off to the northeast. On top of all that, we’ll have gusty wind and afternoon highs in the low to mid teens Saturday/Sunday. Sunday’s the Summer Solstice, and there IS a bit of summer warmth (and some sun) coming for the first half of next week. Daytime highs should be in the mid 20s Tuesday-Thursday (maybe even upper 20s one of two of those days).
