‘Armed and dangerous’ man wanted for murder in central Alberta: RCMP

RCMP are looking for a man wanted for murder they say is armed and dangerous.

Derrick Phazar Whitford, 27, is wanted in connection with the killing of 18-year-old O’Chiese First Nation resident Travis Strawberry.

Strawberry was killed on O’Chiese First Nation in November 2024, and his body was found in a wooded area in Clearwater County.

Whitford has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death.

RCMP said he is also wanted on several other unrelated offences including breach of probation, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer, robbery and firearm offences.

Whitford is described as having a medium complexion, standing six-feet-tall, weighing about 138 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He has been known to use the names Sunny, Sonny, Derrick Dumais and Derrick Whitford-Dumais.

RCMP believe he is armed and dangerous. If seen, he should not be approached and 911 should be called.

Mounties said Whitford may be in the area of O’Chiese First Nation or Sunchild First Nation and has additional ties to Red Deer and Edmonton.
