Cool and gusty with some snow to close the week

Soak up a bit of sun this morning because we may not see much of it in the coming days.

A large area of low pressure over Saskatchewan is hitting that province with heavy snow and on the backside of that system, we’re getting some colder air pulled in over Alberta from the north.

The big weather story for the Edmonton area today will be the wind and the cool temperatures.

We’ll see temperatures hit 3 or 4 C late this morning and then slip to around the freezing mark by late this afternoon.

Wind is expected to be around 20-30 km/h with gusts in the 50-60 km/h range.

Cloudcover will increase through the day, but we’re not expecting any snow through the daytime hours.

We’ll likely get some flurries overnight and then flurries (and possibly some heavier pockets of snow) through the day Friday.

Wind will continue gusting to around 50 km/h through Friday and temperatures will hold steady just slightly below 0 C.

Provided we DO get some snow overnight, watch for slick/icy roads Friday, especially on bridges and overpasses.

Elsewhere: Gusty wind will be an issue for most of central and northern Alberta with the strongest gusts in central and eastern parts of the province.

A snowfall warning remains in effect for northeastern Alberta (including Fort McMurray). That area has already been hit with some heavier snow and parts of the warning zone could get 20-30 cm by the time it’s all done Saturday.

East-central Alberta gets some snow later today and through the day Friday.

We’re also expecting some flurries in the Peace Country and the foothills today, Friday and Saturday (possibly some heavier snow in western Alberta Friday/Saturday).

The difficulty with forecasting snowfall accumulations in the Edmonton area and other parts of central Alberta is that the snow we’ll get in this area isn’t tied directly to a weather system rolling right over us.

The low-pressure system is WAY off to the east and what WE’LL see are some bands of flurries and isolated pockets of heavier snow being spun through on the back edge of that low-pressure system.

Conditions will likely vary quite a bit over small distances. Keep that in mind if you have highway travel over the next few days. Road and weather conditions could change quickly.

All that said, I don’t think most of the Edmonton area will probably end up with 1-5 cm of accumulation (mostly on grassy areas) by the end of the day Friday and could get a bit more Saturday.

No matter how much DOES pile up on the ground, it’ll all be gone in a few days as warmer air returns next week.

Edmonton stays chilly through the weekend, but we should be in double digits by Tuesday.
