Shooting in Côte-des-Neiges: Police watchdog is seeking witnesses

Quebec’s police watchdog, the Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI), will set up a command post on Monday in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood of Montreal to locate witnesses to the shooting that killed a police officer and a civilian on June 22.

The mobile command post will be located on Avenue de Courtrai, at the corner of Décarie Boulevard, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

“The BEI is seeking witnesses to this police operation or anyone who may have video footage of the incident,” the organization stated in a news release.

The BEI is conducting an independent investigation into this case, a standard procedure that is initiated whenever a person dies or suffers a serious injury during a police operation.

Officers from the Montreal police (SPVM) arrived at the scene around 11:35 a.m. after receiving a report of an armed individual.

Officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, was killed in the line of duty during an exchange of gunfire with a shooter near a hotel.

The shooting also claimed two other lives: Michel Moshe Mizrahi, a 68-year-old bystander, and the alleged shooter, identified as Scott Hatfield.

Hatfield, a 25-year-old man from Lethbridge, Alberta, reportedly left behind a manifesto expressing his hatred toward women and calling for violence.
