An Edmonton company has been fined $217,000 in connection with the death of a worker who got caught in a manual lathe. The worker was killed at Rylex Machine and Supply Ltd. in March 2024 after getting entangled in the lathe’s moving parts. The company pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of failing to provide safeguards if a worker may come into contact with moving parts of machinery or equipment. All other charges were dropped. The company was fined $1,000, including the victim surcharge; another $216,000 was to be paid to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) as part of creative sentencing. That money will be used by NAIT to buy a dual-spindle lathe and invest in education “that promotes a strong workplace culture among future trades professionals,” the Government of Alberta said in a media release. Rylex Machine and Supply Ltd. was also placed on two years of enhanced regulatory supervision.
