Edmonton high school celebrates cultural makeup with student-led event

Students at J. Percy Page participated in ‘One Page, Many Worlds’ which showcases traditional food, clothing, dancing and games.

A southeast Edmonton high school has been celebrating its diverse cultural makeup for nearly two decades.

Students at J. Percy Page hosted its 18th One Page, Many Worlds event, a student-led celebration showcasing traditional food, clothing, dancing and games, on Wednesday afternoon.

Pakistan, Syria, Palestine, Nigeria, Ukraine, India, El Salvador, Canada and Portugal were just some of the countries represented.

“I feel like it brings us together … It’s one school with so many different cultures from different parts of the world with different stories and histories, and I think it’s essential to share that with everyone,” said Roma, a student at the event.

It’s a Mill Woods neighbourhood staple at this point, with restaurants donating food on top of student contributions and performances from a range of groups.

“I think this encourages kids to be proud of their culture, but also to just see other cultures in a positive light,” said teacher Karen Alvarado. “It’s not about the news, it’s not about the politics, it’s just food, dancing and music.”
