Edmonton weather: Warm today, but this week will pack a wintry punch

Temperatures in Edmonton will get a few degrees above 0 C today, for the first time in a week-and-a-half (since Dec. 4).

But, the positive temperatures won’t stick around for long as some cooler air returns over the next few days.

It doesn’t look like we’re falling back into a deep freeze (highs near or below -20 C) until the end of the week.

We’ll be closer to average (in the -5 C range) Tuesday and then in the -10 C to -15 C range for Wednesday/Thursday in Edmonton.

We’re watching two potential precipitation events for this week. The first comes through the Edmonton area tonight and the second moves through the region on Wednesday.

There’s an area of low pressure bringing heavy snow and some freezing rain to northern Alberta today.

As the cold front behind that system pushes south, we’ll get a risk of freezing rain and then some snow in the Edmonton area and surrounding regions late this evening.

We’re also expecting some gusty wind tonight.

Snow totals could be anywhere between 1 to 4 cm by early Tuesday morning.

Tuesday looks calmer and we should get some clearing. So... mainly sunny to partly cloudy skies through the day.

The next low-pressure system will blast across southern Alberta on Wednesday with rain, freezing rain and heavy snow.

It’s mainly southeastern Alberta that gets the rain and freezing rain. It should all be snow for the rest of southern and central Alberta.

Snowfall totals for the Edmonton region are still a bit of a question mark given some uncertainty with the exact path that system will take.

But...it very possible that we could see a broad area of 10 to 20 cm from around Edmonton south through Red Deer/Wainwright areas and back up through the Edson/Whitecourt regions.
