Edmonton weather: Weekend ‘cooldown’ coming

Published:

Cory Edel's forecast for Friday, April 11, 2025.

It’ll be another warm day with temperatures in the mid-teens in Edmonton and area this afternoon.

Sunshine this morning will give way to a few clouds this afternoon and we’re expecting the wind to pick up late this morning with gusts in the 30-40 km/h range. That should continue through the afternoon before easing overnight.

Breezy conditions are also expected through the weekend and temperatures will slide back to highs near 10 C.

That’s no worse than average, but a lot “cooler” than the past week.

Daytime highs have been above 15 C for five of the past six days in the city.

We’ll see another bump in temperature early next week as highs return to the mid to upper teens.

There’s a broad Upper Trough (cool air aloft) taking over in the coming days and that’ll be at least partly responsible for the slight cooldown.

It’s also likely to contribute to some increased cloudcover through the weekend, although I don’t like we’ll be completely overcast in the Edmonton area...more like a “mix of sun & cloud” or “cloudy with sunny breaks.”

A surface low pressure system is bringing some showers to northern Alberta today and that’ll probably flip over to some west snow this afternoon/evening.

Behind that system, we’ll get a more northwesterly wind...also contributing to the weekend cooldown.

There IS a slight chance of some spotty precip in or near the Edmonton region this weekend...but...the risk is low and I’ve left it out of the official forecast.

That said - IF we do get ANY precip, there’s a slight chance early Saturday morning for a few wet flurries and then an even slimmer possibility of a spotty shower Saturday evening.

Sunday afternoon also has a SLIGHT chance of a spotty shower.

Again...the odds are against it & even if it develops it won’t be any significant moisture.

Snow is very likely to develop in the mountain parks tonight and there could be several centimetres of accumulation by the end of Saturday, particularly in the mountain parks & foothills near Banff and Calgary.

We’ll also see some showers turn over to wet snow in the Lethbridge/Medicine Hat areas Saturday/Sunday morning.
