Edmonton’s Food Bank has launched a seed bank to help people with low incomes grow their own food.
The seeds donated by local stores, garden centres and local gardeners, will be provided free of charge to clients.
Tamisan Bencz-Knight of the food bank says the program was inspired by the Edmonton Public Library.
“They had a seed bank a while ago. Unfortunately, they had too many withdrawals and not enough deposits. So we flipped the narrative last year. We started talking to our suppliers, our donors and everyone saying, ‘Hey, please give us your seeds, and we will help find new homes for them,‘” she told CTV News Edmonton.
“We did a lot of work with the teams last fall, and now we’re able to share the seeds out with the community.”
