Get out and enjoy winter with community events galore this weekend in Edmonton

For Edmontonians looking to get out of the house now that the weather has gone from frigid to warm, there’s plenty to do.

From a witch in broad daylight to ice racing, here’s what’s happening in and around the city.

Get out and party

The Edmonton city hall rink will have its final full Winter City Weekend of the season. Friday and Saturday will have you grooving with a live DJ, while Sunday swings with big band, soca, salsa and more.

The cold over the Family Day long weekend had many staying indoors, with some community events having to cancel. Some Edmonton community organizations are making up for that this weekend.

The Westwood WinterFest will happen Saturday from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Westwood Community League.

Over in Millhurst, the Family Fun Day Extravaganza will also happen on Saturday from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Griesbach also rescheduled its Winter Village Warmup to Sunday at Maple Leaf Pond.

Saturday is the day to celebrate with the Glengarry Community League also hosting its WinterFest from 1 - 4 p.m.

The Glenora Community League is holding a Winter Carnival from 2 - 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Bring your competitive spirit to the South Clareview Community League’s cardboard sled competition on Saturday at 1 p.m.

On Sunday, the Parkallen Community League is hosting its Snowfest from 1 - 4 p.m.

The Strathcona Community League is also holding its Winterfest on Sunday from 1 - 5 p.m.

The Town of Devon is celebrating a milestone birthday at the Devon Community Centre on Saturday. The 75th anniversary birthday bash begins at 1 p.m.

Over in Sturgeon County, Winterfest is set to go on Saturday at the Sturgeon Agriplex. The event goes from 3 - 8 p.m. and will have a petting zoo, hayrides, food and plenty of other activities inside and around Cardiff Park.

Show offs

Evil never dies, it merely waits and shows up for lunch, at least The Noon Witch does at the Varscona Theatre. The comedy show, based on Hungarian folklore, begins on Friday and runs until March 9.

It’s no Mambo No. 5, but Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 will bring a taste of the Scottish highlands to the Winspear Centre on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

It might be midwinter now, but the Citadel Theatre is looking to bring some groovy summer vibes with A Midsummer Night’s Dream: The 70’s Musical. The show begins Sunday and runs until March 23.

Mother Mother is taking The Stand at Rogers Place on Saturday for the Grief Chapter Tour. Cavetown and Winnetka Bowling League are opening the show, which starts at 7 p.m.

Despite the warm weather, there’s a chill in the air at Fort Edmonton Park during the paranormal tours. The nighttime event began at the beginning of February and goes until March 30.

If you’re looking for something less scary, Fort Edmonton Park is also hosting an Indigenous storytelling series each Saturday at the Indigenous Peoples Experience. The series runs until March 15.

Back on the ice

After scoring the overtime goal to win the 4 Nations Face-Off final, Connor McDavid returns to the Oilers as they head to Philadelphia, but Edmonton won’t be bereft of hockey.

The Oil Kings will host the Tigers on Sunday at Rogers Place at 6 p.m. for the Ghostbusters theme game. The two teams play Friday in Medicine Hat, with the Oil Kings looking to redeem themselves after a 6-1 loss to the Tigers in January.

For some outdoor fun, Bike and ATV Ice Racing will take over Cattail Crossing Golf & Winter Club on Saturday and Sunday.
