A nine-year-old girl was killed and four others seriously injured in a crash near Killam, Alta.

A nine-year-old girl is dead and three other people are in critical condition after a crash in Killam on Friday.

The crash in the intersection of Highway 36 and Highway 13 was posted to 511 Alberta at 1:16 p.m.

RCMP said early investigation suggests a vehicle, driven by a 72-year-old, was headed south on Highway 36 when the driver failed to stop at a stop sign.

It hit a vehicle with five people inside, killing a nine-year-old passenger. RCMP said another four people from that same vehicle were taken to hospital.

A 13-year-old boy, another nine-year-old girl and a 43-year-old man were all in critical condition Saturday morning and an 11-year-old boy was stable.

The man and the woman in the first vehicle, both 72, were not seriously hurt.

RCMP said a STARS Air Ambulance was not able to attend due to poor weather.

A GoFundMe was set up Friday afternoon for the family in the vehicle that was hit.

As of Saturday afternoon, it has raised more than $43,000.

The Town of Killam is about 140 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.

Correction

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the crash happened on Highway 32. It was, in fact, Highway 36.
