‘It feels like I’m an Oiler’: 3-on-3 ball hockey tournament returns to Ice District

The third-annual Ice District Classic 3-on-3 Ball Hockey Tournament began Friday.

Teams of 10 got the chance to hit the pavement for the three-day tournament, with 52 teams participating.

The tournament was open to teams of all skill levels, and it’s important to be able to introduce kids to hockey through ball hockey in an accessible and affordable way, according to Patrick Garland, the director of alumni relations and hockey engagement with the Oilers Entertainment Group.

“The main thing is to just come down, have fun,” he said.

“The Ice District Classic is more than a tournament — it’s a celebration of community, connection and the shared love of ball hockey,” said Steve Weber, the Director of BHE1 Sports in a news release.

Getting to play hockey so close to where the Oilers do was exciting for some of the players.

“It feels great, a little bit nerve-wracking,” said Jaxson Dennis, who’s playing in the tournament. “It feels like I’m an Oiler.”

Saturday will also be the Oilers Community Foundation Day. Between noon and 3 p.m., there will be family activities, craft stations and community booths with information about the Every Kid Deserves a Shot initiative.

Oilers alumni, mascot Hunter the Lynx, the Oilers Orange and Blue Ice Crew, and the Oilers Drum and Brass Crew will also be at Ice District.

Community Day is a free-to-attend event, including the tournament.
