An extreme cold warning remains in effect for most of Alberta, including Edmonton and surrounding areas.
Only northwestern Alberta, the mountain parks and foothills are not under that alert.
Temperatures around -30 C with wind chill near -40 in Edmonton and area will last for a few hours this morning.
In eastern Alberta, wind chills are into the mid -40s this morning.
Wind chills in the -37 to -47 range mean frostbite is possible on exposed skin in as little as five to 15 minutes.
Midday, temperatures in Edmonton will rise to around -25 C with a wind chill near -35.
By late this afternoon, we’ll get up around -20 C with a wind chill near -30.
Wind speeds should be in the 10-15 km/h range throughout the day and then increasing to around 20 km/h tonight and for most of Wednesday.
Temperatures won’t drop off as much tonight as some milder air starts to move in from the west.
But, with a stronger wind Wednesday, it’s still going to FEEL cold.
We’ll have a morning temperature near -23 C in Edmonton and a morning wind chill in the mid -30s.
Temperatures climb to around -13 C in the afternoon, but it won’t FEEL any warmer than the mid -20s thanks to the wind chill.
So...we have two more days of the deep freeze before it gets noticeably warmer.
And...it’ll definitely be noticeable on Thursday as we go from one extreme to the other.
As is so often the case with arctic air, you’re either IN IT...or OUT OF IT (there’s very little in-between time).
Temperatures will start out in the minus mid-teens on Thursday and then shoot up to just slightly above 0 C by late Thursday afternoon.
Once we get rid of the arctic air, it’ll stay gone for the remainder of the month.
Daytime highs are projected to be in the 2 to 7 C range from Friday (Feb. 21) through to the start of March.
