It’s still cold out there this morning, but we’re into the final hours of the short-lived cold snap.
Daytime highs hit -16 C on Saturday and -19 C on Sunday and temperatures bottomed out at -27.6 C in the city Sunday morning, Edmonton’s coldest temperature so far this winter.
It was -25 C early Monday morning, but we’re expecting to be in the -12 to -15 C range by midday and then the -5 to -10 C range this afternoon.
Temperatures will continue to rise tonight and we’ll be around the freezing mark for Tuesday in the city.
BUT...wind is going to be a factor, especially Tuesday.
We’ll get 10-20 km/h wind speeds through today and a mix of sun and cloud.
But, a deep area of low pressure will move from the Northwest Territories into Saskatchewan today and Tuesday.
On the back side of that system, we’ll get some snow and 20-30 km/h wind speeds with gusts of 50-60 km/h Tuesday, especially in the afternoon and evening.
The snow doesn’t look like it’ll amount to much more than 1-5 cm, but blowing snow could be a big factor for the afternoon/evening commute on Tuesday.
Once we get out of the arctic air, we’ll be out for a while.
Daytime highs are forecast to be in the -2 to 2 C range through the week.
AND...after Tuesday’s late-day snow, we should be snow-free for the back half of the week.
BUT...gusty wind will probably return for Thursday/Friday.
