A woman is dead and a man is in serious condition following a head-on highway crash northeast of Edmonton on Wednesday morning.

RCMP said two trucks crashed shortly after 8 a.m. near Ashmont just east of the intersection at Highway 28 and Highway 36.

A 40-year-old woman from Maskwacis was killed and a man in his 70s was airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to Edmonton in serious condition.

RCMP said impairment by drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash.

The roads were temporarily closed in both directions, but have since reopened.
