Telus World of Science Edmonton (TWOSE) has announced it will be closed indefinitely because of a fire at the facility earlier this week.
TWOSE says while the fire that broke out on Monday was small, it caused significant smoke damage throughout the building.
No permanent exhibits were damaged and the fire did not impact the structural integrity of the building, but the closure will allow for extensive cleaning and removal of smoke residue and particles.
A mechanical unit in the feature exhibit hall will also have to be replaced, forcing the cancellation of the Amazing Pollinators Exhibition.
“We deeply regret the inconvenience this extended closure may cause to our community, especially to those looking forward to exploring our exhibits and programs,” president and CEO Constance Scarlett said in a news release on Friday.
“The health and safety of our guests, volunteers and staff is our top priority, and we are committed to restoring the science centre to the high standards of safety and quality that our guests have come to expect.”
Visitors are encouraged to check for updates on the TWOSE website and social media channels.
Customers with pre-booked tickets will be contacted directly.
Space enthusiasts are also invited to visit the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Observatory on Friday and Saturday between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to catch the parade of planets.
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn will all be visible in the early evening.
The event is free to the public.
