Poor road conditions near Edmonton, Red Deer prompt advisory

Mounties are asking motorists to slow down and avoid travelling due to poor road conditions in the Edmonton and Red Deer areas.

Snow and rain are contributing to poor conditions and officers are responding to multiple crashes and vehicles in ditches, said the advisory issued Thursday morning.

If travelling is necessary, RCMP ask that motorists slow down.

CTV News Edmonton’s chief meteorologist Josh Classen says snow mixed with pockets of rain across the city and north-central Alberta are expected to continue through the morning with some areas seeing the conditions through the day. Temperatures will hover around or slightly above freezing.

A chance of flurries or light snow is forecasted for the region this evening into Friday morning with an arctic air bringing the temperature to -12 C in the afternoon.

An Environment Canada snowfall warning is in effect for parts of northwestern Alberta between Whitecourt and High Prairie which could see up to 20 cm of snow through Thursday into Friday evening.

511 Alberta says travel may be difficult in some areas and visibility could be reduced. Drivers are advised to be prepared to adjust driving to changing road conditions.
