Protest of provincial government policies expected to affect downtown traffic

The Alberta Federation of Labour is expecting thousands to gather across the province to protest a number of issues it has with the Alberta government.

A protest organized by the Alberta federation of Labour (AFL) is expected to impact downtown Edmonton traffic on Friday.

The protest is expected to last from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and participants will be marching from Centennial Plaza east down Jasper Avenue.

“Motorists are advised to prepare for significant and ongoing traffic delays in these areas and/or seek alternate routes,” Edmonton Police Service said in a statement.

The event is one of 20 planned in 15 communities across Alberta for what the AFL is calling a Day of Protest.

“What are we protesting? Just look around. We’re protesting all of it,” AFL president Gil McGowan said in a press release.

The AFL said issues of concern include separatism, health care, under-funding of public services, and coal mining in the Rockies.
