Students make toys out of recyclable materials for humane society animals

Animals at the Edmonton Humane Society have some new toys to call their own thanks to some Grade 3 students from Father Michael Mireau.

Grade 3 students delivered dozens of handmade toys for the animals at the Edmonton Humane Society on Wednesday.

“We’re bringing tug toys made out of old fabric and little bunny balls, where we cut up toilet paper rolls and bunched them together,” explained April, one of the students from Father Michael Mireau Catholic Elementary/Junior High School.

“I mostly made tug toys and bunny balls, but we also made lots of cards.”

The agency provides instructions to make toys out of household recyclables online.

The Grade 3 class chose the activity in social studies class.

“We learn about citizenship, and I want the kids to know that they are citizens – not only of our classroom, but also of their world. So I always try to do a social justice project and I let them take the reins on it so that they know… they can make a difference in our world,” their teacher, Stephanie Lund, explained.

“They see animals as an important part of our community. And I think it really brings me happiness to see that they want to help the community.”

April said animals are very important to her.

“My favourite part was knowing that we were doing something good for our community and that we can do something, even though we’re small.”
