More than 300 swimmers are in Edmonton this weekend for a big competition.

Top swimmers are competing at the Speedo Canadian Swimming Open at Kinsmen Sports Centre until Saturday.

Oliver Dawson, 17, won the men’s 50-metre breaststroke with a personal best, and meet record, of 27.98 seconds.

From Grande Prairie, he said it was “really nice” to compete in Edmonton.

“The goal for the past whatever amount of months has been to go 27,” he told CTV News Edmonton. “I’ve hit 28 consistently. Today was just the result of knocking on the door.”

Mark Perry, Swimming Canada’s national distance coach, said “everyone’s really excited to be here.”

“The best part of the job is being at the meet because a lot of the work goes on behind the scenes, and then when you come to the swim meet, that’s when you actually see it come to fruition, and you see what you’ve worked hard to do the same with the athletes.”

Heats begin at 9:30 a.m. and finals take place at 5 p.m., according to Swimming Canada.
