Trespasser and homeowner both charged in eastern Alberta break-in, fight

Two men, including the homeowner, are facing multiple charges after a break-in at an eastern Alberta house left a suspect seriously injured months ago.

Bonnyville RCMP say several men forced themselves into another man’s house around 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 after a fight earlier in the day.

The homeowner was assaulted with a weapon and subsequently grabbed his own weapon, causing “serious injury” to one of the suspects, police said.

The suspects left the house and drove away, but not before the homeowner could fire shots at the vehicle.

A 54-year-old Bonnyville resident is now accused of the assault on the homeowner and faces charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was released on conditions and is set to appear in court on May 19.

The homeowner, a 52-year-old Bonnyville resident, is also facing charges of uttering threats and seven firearm-related offences. He was released on conditions and will appear in court on May 26.

Both men were treated at separate hospitals and released. Mounties say the investigation is ongoing.
