An 11-year-old boy who left a false threat on a Guelph elementary school’s voicemail will not be facing charges, according to police.
Guelph Police said in a release on Monday that the investigation into a school threat against Waverley Drive Public School was completed.
They said they were called to the school at around 8:35 a.m. Friday after staff said they received a threatening voicemail overnight. Students and staff were evacuated down a few blocks to École Élémentaire L’Odyssée as police investigated.
School staff reached out to parents to let them know they were safe and could be picked up by their caregivers at École Élémentaire L’Odyssée, while officers and canine units checked all backpacks left at Waverley Drive Public School for any explosive devices.
The school was cleared by the afternoon and students were given permission to pick up their backpacks.
After further investigation, police said they determined the phone used to leave the voicemail belonged to a teenager. The teenager told them his family was visiting friends the evening before, where he had been playing video games, when he heard the 11-year-old boy leaving the message on his phone. The boy then asked the teen if there was a way to get the voicemail back and delete it.
Police said they spoke to the boy and his mom about the seriousness of his actions. Since the boy was below 12-years-old, police said no charges were laid.
