Waterloo Regional Police have laid more than 40 charges following a four-day initiative targeting retail thefts. “The focused enforcement project was launched in response to ongoing concerns from retailers regarding increasing incidents of shoplifting and organized retail theft impacting businesses across the region,” police said in a media release. “Working closely with loss prevention personnel and retail partners, officers conducted proactive enforcement operations aimed at identifying offenders, disrupting criminal activity and enhancing public safety.” The initiative began on July 6. In total, North Division’s Direct Action Response Team (DART) arrested 23 people. “Several prolific and repeat offenders were identified and taken into custody,” they said. More than 40 charges were laid, such as theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000. Police said they also recovered approximately $1,450 in stolen merchandise. “Beyond the immediate financial losses, these offences also contribute to increased operating costs, safety concerns for retail staff, and reduced quality of life within the community,” they wrote.
