Avian flu investigation closes Murphy Park in Mount Forest

An investigation into a possible case of avian influenza has prompted the closure of Murphy Park in Mount Forest.

The Township of Wellington North announced the closure Friday on its website and social media, citing an active investigation into the situation.

In an email to CTV News, the township said a resident reported the possible discovery of one to four dead geese in the park earlier that day. During a follow-up phone call with the resident, the township learned the birds had been seen floating in the middle of the nearby river, not along the shoreline. Officials emphasized there is no risk to public safety.

As a precaution, the township temporarily closed the park. The decision follows an Oct. 8 alert from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) regarding an avian influenza outbreak in poultry in Wellington County, near Mount Forest.

The township said it immediately notified public health after being informed of the possible dead birds and is working with them to inform the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative for further investigation.

Residents are encouraged to report any sick or dead birds through the Township of Wellington North’s website under the “Birds” section. Reports should include a photo taken from a safe distance and the exact location where the birds were found.

Officials advise residents to report any instances involving waterfowl, raptors, crows, ravens or shorebirds, as well as birds showing signs of illness such as difficulty walking or flying, twisted necks, discharge from the eyes or beak, tremors or loss of balance.

The township has not yet provided a timeline for when Murphy Park will reopen.

Avian flu symptoms and risks

Avian influenza is primarily found in wild birds. While human infection is rare, Public Health Ontario said it can occur after close contact with infected birds or contaminated environments.

Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, cough, sore throat, eye redness, breathing difficulties, diarrhea and vomiting. Health officials note the virus is not easily spread from person to person.

The township is reminding residents not to handle sick or dead birds and to keep pets and children away from any found in the area.
