For the first time ever, the City of Cambridge will be the primary organizer of this year’s Canada Day celebration.
Previously, the event was hosted by a Canada Day committee.
“With administrative abilities and raising costs and just the heavy load that’s come on – the city has taken it on as one of its primary events,” said Matt Cuthbert, the manager of special events with the city.
The event starts with a popular parade followed by activities at Riverside Park.
Cuthbert said patriotism is at an all-time high lately, so they expect a big turnout.
“And we’ll anticipate throughout the day having a migration of about 30,000 people,” he said.
The city needs sponsors, vendors and about 100 volunteers to make it work.
“So please anyone who is interested, go online and fill out the application. We’d be happy to have you join us,” said Cuthbert.
Many Cambridge residents said they’re definitely interested in attending.
“Given the situation with the U.S., I think the more we celebrate Canada Day, the better. And the bigger the better,” said Les Wells, a Preston resident.
The night will end with fireworks (bylaw permitting).
There will also be live music, interactive games, a beer garden and food trucks.
