More snow in the forecast for parts of the province

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for southern Ontario. CTV’s Ashley Bacon has the details.

The snow isn’t slowing down in southern Ontario.

Environment Canada says parts of the province could get another 5 to 10 cm of the white stuff on Wednesday afternoon.

“An Alberta clipper will continue to bring snow across the area which may be heavy at times today,” the alert read.

Waterloo Region, Guelph, Brantford and all areas between Grand Bend and Ottawa were included in the warning. It also extended to Montreal, Quebec City and much of New Brunswick.

“The snow is expected to taper to scattered flurries or drizzle from southwest to northeast this afternoon,” the alert said. “There will be the risk for some freezing drizzle as well. Travel will likely be challenging. Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will likely be reduced at times. Allow extra time for travel.”

Rob Kuhn, a meteorologist with Environment Canada’s Ontario Storm Prediction Centre, said the Stanley Park area in Kitchener had about 10 cm of snow accumulation by 4 p.m. Wednesday.

A snow squall warning was also issued for Brantford, Woodstock, Stratford, St. Marys, Long Point, Goderich and as far north as Saugeen Shores. Environment Canada said those areas could get between 20 to 30 cm of snow beginning Wednesday night and continuing into Thursday.

Parking bans

Snow events were declared ahead of the storm.

The breakdown by city:

• Waterloo – Parking ban began at 12 p.m. Wednesday
• Kitchener – Parking ban began at 2 a.m. Wednesday
• Cambridge – Parking ban began at 7 a.m. Wednesday

On-street parking is prohibited for 24 hours following the declaration of a snow event, to allow plows time to clear city streets. Any vehicle left on the road could be ticketed or towed at the owner’s expense.

On Wednesday afternoon, Kitchener extended their snow event until noon Thursday.

School bus cancellations

Schools remained open Wednesday even though all school buses, taxis and special education vehicles serving the Waterloo Catholic District School Board and Waterloo Region District School Board were cancelled due to the poor weather and road conditions.
