With warmer weather in the forecast, road construction projects may soon start throughout Waterloo Region.
“We have a limited construction window. We have a lot to get done before snow comes back,” Francis Reyes, Director of Engineering for the City of Waterloo, said.
The Region of Waterloo is preparing to rip up several roads across its communities.
Starting this month, a new roundabout will be installed at the Ottawa Street South and Westmount Road East intersection.
The Region is also working on improvements to Bleams Road and plans to install a new roundabout at the Trussler Road intersection.
In the City of Kitchener, one project includes major road and sewer improvements to King Street from Ottawa Street North to Stirling Avenue North. The city hopes to begin construction this spring and wrap up by fall, but a full schedule has not yet been confirmed.
Several projects are also planned in the City of Waterloo this construction season. Union Street is earmarked for reconstruction between King Street South and Moore Avenue South. Reyes said there will be some delays as the city does tree removal and boulevard work this summer, but major construction won’t happen until next year.
“We’re still trying to secure property acquisitions in terms of what’s needed to widen the road. Also gearing up for utility work that needs to be completed in advance of the main construction proceeding next year,” Reyes said.
The cities are asking residents for their patience while the road work is underway. Residents are urged to be prepared for any delays or detours that might impact their commute.
“We know construction season’s difficult. But really, it’s a short-term pain for long-term gain, right? Essentially, you’ll have brand new infrastructure. You’ll have safer roads for both pedestrians and vehicle alike. We always appreciate the residents for their patience,” Reyes said.
All the road projects will be weather dependent, and timing for when they’re complete can vary. Each city and the region said they will keep up to date information online.
