Ontario Provincial Police are putting out a warning after an online scammer attempted to blackmail a child in Wellington County using their intimate photos.
The practice is commonly known as ‘sextortion.’ A scammer threatens to share intimate videos or images if the victim does not meet their demands. The perpetrator usually demands money or more sexually explicit content.
In this case, the young victim said they were contacted through the social media platform TikTok by an unknown person claiming to be a youth. The two exchanged intimate images and then the suspect threatened to distribute the pictures unless the victim sent them money.
The victim did not send any money and reported the incident to a parent.
