Grand Erie Public Health reported two new cases of the measles on Monday, bringing the outbreak’s total to 21.

The health unit covers Haldimand County, Norfolk County, Brantford and the County of Brant.

Officials said the two new illnesses are linked to a previously reported infection and everyone is currently recovering at home.

“GEPH is investigating and following up with known contacts who may have been exposed to the measles virus through these individuals,” they said in Monday’s media release.

Grand Erie Public Health shared four additional locations where the public may have been exposed to the measles virus:

  • Family Practice Office, Roulston’s Pharmacy, 65 Donly Dr. N Suite B Unit 4, Jan. 28, 2025, from 5 to 7:20 p.m.
  • Shoppers Drug Mart, 470 Norfolk St., Simcoe, Jan 30, 2025, from 10 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.
  • Best Western Hotel, 17565 Yonge St, Newmarket, Jan 31, 2025, at 2 p.m. to Feb 1, 2025, at 11:30 a.m.

Symptoms of measles

The most common symptoms of measles are a fever, cough, and runny nose, as well as red and watery eyes. A rash, with red spots and blotchy patches, begins on the face and then spreads down to the arms and legs.

One reason measles is so highly contagious is that it can hang around in the air up to two hours after an infected person has left the room.

Symptoms usually start between 7 and 21 days after exposure.

Anyone who suspects they have been exposed to the illness is asked to take extra precautions, such as staying home and avoiding high-risk setting like doctor’s offices, childcare facilities and hospital emergency rooms.

Doctors recommend getting two MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccines.
