The Region of Waterloo has won its bid to host the 2026 Ontario Summer Games.
The event, held every two years, is described as the province’s largest multi-sport event for young athletes between the ages of 12 and 18. It’s also an opportunity to prepare the teens for national and international competition.
The Ontario Summer Games will feature a total of 24 sporting events, including baseball, lacrosse and soccer.
The last time the region hosted the event was in 2002.

Allister Scorgie, the director of sport hosting for Explore Waterloo Region, called it a special privilege for the community.
“It’s been 23 years since the last Ontario Summer Games were held here, and our local communities are excited to host the more than 4,000 athletes, coaches and staff,” he said in a media release.
The event is expected to generate more than $6 million for the local economy.
“Hosting these games will strengthen collaboration in the community, boost tourism and the local hospitality industry, and underscore our ability to attract large-scale events,” said regional chair Karen Redman.
The provincial government said it provided $1.6 million in funding to support the region’s bid to host the summer games.
