One person has been arrested in connection with three thefts from unlocked vehicles in Preston, while police are still investigating 17 similar incidents in a matter of days.
According to Waterloo Regional Police, the thefts happened during the overnight and early morning hours between Feb. 7 and Feb. 18.
In one incident, around 6 a.m. on Feb. 10, a garage door opener stolen from a vehicle on Pheasant Avenue and was used to open the garage door of a home. Police said power tools and a leaf blower, were stolen.
Other items targeted in these incidents included cash, wallets, electronics, identity documents, and fragrances.
On Feb. 18, a 30-year-old man was arrested in connection to three thefts - one on Bishop Street South and two on Clare Avenue. Stolen property, including a laptop, cell phones and bank cards, were recovered.
The male was charged with possession of stolen goods under $5,000 and possession of an identity document. He was held in police custody for a bail hearing.
Police said the investigation into the17 other incidents remains ongoing.
“Police encourage vehicle owners to park in a secure location where possible, lock vehicle doors, and ensure that valuables are not left in plain sight,” said police in a news release.
Police are asking people to report any suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods immediately. If possible, try to obtain a description and direction of travel of the suspect and/or vehicle.
