A 39-year-old Kitchener man is facing charges following a crash involving a stolen car in Guelph.

Officers were called to Gosling Gardens south of Clairfields Drive around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said the driver of the stolen vehicle was speeding northward when he lost control. The vehicle crashed into two parked cars and hit a tree before flipping over.

“Witnesses described a male driver of the silver car getting out of the vehicle and running away and running through some backyards and going over a fence,” said Scott Tracey, a spokesperson for the Guelph Police Service.

A canine team found the driver hiding in a nearby backyard. He was arrested and taken to a Hamilton hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The investigation revealed the car had been reported stolen from Waterloo Region earlier that morning.

Police haven’t said what charges the man faces.

The incident has left area residents in a state of shock.

Jordyn Mundell said she was getting ready for work when she heard a loud bang.

“I heard what sounded like a garbage truck outside, and I thought it was a garbage truck hitting a car on the street,” she said. “But then we started hearing car alarms go off and I ran downstairs.

“I basically came down to my roommate’s car in the front lawn, my car totaled and a car on its side and a guy trying to kick his way out of the windshield,” said Mundell.

Mundell had just moved into the neighbourhood four days earlier.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is the safe part of Guelph,‘” she recalled. “Normally, stuff doesn’t happen. It’s on a not-so-busy street.”

Mundell said despite the shake up, she still believes the area is safe to live in.

“Now, I guess we can be known as the house where the two cars got totaled in the driveway,” she said.

Guelph police said they expect to have more information regarding charges on Thursday.
