Suspected bear spray used during Guelph robbery

A Guelph man is facing robbery and weapons charges after police believe bray spray was used in a west-end apartment building.

Officers with the Guelph Police Service were called to the building near Willow Road and Dawson Road on Saturday around 6 a.m. They were told there was a concerning smell inside the building.

When they arrived, members of the Guelph Fire Department told them a noxious substance had been sprayed in one of the units.

While they were responding to the call, two residents approached the officers and told them a man they knew had come to their unit earlier that day and brandished a cannister of spray while demanding the woman’s purse. A physical struggle began and the spray was discharged.

A 32-year-old Guelph man was located downtown later that day. He was arrested and charged with robbery, administering a noxious substance and mischief.
