Avian influenza infections identified on three Strathroy-Caradoc properties

The CFIA has confirmed a second avian flu outbreak at three commercial poultry farms near Strathroy. CTV’s Gerry Dewan explains.

A highly contagious version of avian flu continues its spread in the Strathroy-Caradoc area, outside London, Ont.

H5N1, described by Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) officials as a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), has been identified on three commercial properties. Concentrated southwest of Strathroy, the first infection was identified on Nov. 14, with subsequent infections on Nov. 22 and 26.

CFIA officials responded by email to questions submitted by CTV London. They indicate that there were 32,000 turkeys affected at the first identified site (ON-IP63) and 15,625 turkeys affected at the second site (ON-IP64). The number of birds affected at the third site hasn’t been identified.

The CFIA has established a primary control zone around the region to prevent the spread of the virus. In that restricted area, a permit is needed to move birds, their products, and any by-products.

Infected birds will be culled, and the properties will be monitored for any further infections.

A cull of ostriches in Edgewood, British Columbia, earlier this month sparked heated debate over whether all the birds needed to be killed, or if controlled monitoring could have been used. CFIA officials said birds can have the disease without immediately showing signs and the cull was needed to prevent spread through contact with migratory birds.

CFIA officials said the common source of spread in our region is through migratory birds, which is why we see outbreaks in the spring and fall.

They say human infection with avian influenza viruses is rare and usually occurs after close contact with infected birds or highly contaminated environments.
