Fantasy football popularity grows, but experts warn of addiction risks

Pro sports are ramping up, and as CTV London’s Lauren Stallone reports, gambling on games may have mental health impacts.

Fantasy football season is officially underway, bringing with it excitement for some and concerns for others.

“Sports is my way to escape and kind of break away from the pressures from school,” said Travis Mackay, a fantasy football player.

Mackay explained fantasy football has allowed him to stay connected to the sports world.

“I am an avid sports fan,” said Mackay. “Throughout my entire life, I grew up playing sports, so it’s been a key part of who I am.”

He said participating in the game is a great way to stay in touch with friends

“Whether you’re making fun of them for how bad your team is or really excited about how the team you follow is doing well, it’s always a good time,” said Mackay.

While Mackay explained fantasy football is nothing more than a friendly competition, mental health experts warn there are risks that can impact an individual’s overall wellbeing.

“When it becomes a problem and they come to see us, it’s having a negative impact on their day to day living,” said addiction councillor April Laithwaite. “As well as relationships, engagements, and other activities.”

Laithwaite explained when individuals participating in sports betting and fantasy football wager money on the result of a game, it can impact their mood.

“Typically, when they’re spending more time than they should gambling, their mood is dropping,” said Laithwaite. “They might be feeling some more depression or more anxiety.”

Laithwaite said young people are especially vulnerable to addiction because their brains are still developing until ‘around the age of 26.’

She explained they are ‘more vulnerable’ to addiction and more likely to let the outcome of a game or team’s performance dictate their mood. Something Mackay said he doesn’t take lightly.

“If you lose a week that sucks, it’s not the greatest feeling in the world because you’ve lost something,” said Mackay. “At the same time, you kind of realize it’s just a game.”
