‘I’ve been trying to feel safe here’: Neighbours unnerved by latest shooting in residential neighbourhood

One day later, the police cars and yellow crime scene tape are gone from a north London townhouse complex. What’s left are the bullet holes in one unit’s door, and the anxiety among neighbours.

“Been pretty close knit and peaceful around here until suddenly in the middle of the night, ‘blah blah blah,’” said neighbour Conrad Causley, who has lived in the Huron Street residence for eight months.

Causley said he was awoken early Monday morning by unusual sounding gunfire coming from across the courtyard.

“And I heard just a couple little sounds like splats, not like a handgun. Something automatic. Like a suppressor, or something like that,” he explained.

The London Police Service said around 3:20 a.m. Monday, multiple gun shots struck a residence in the 700 block of Huron Street. The home was occupied at the time of the shooting, but no-one was injured.

Neighbour Anne Allender was already awake when she heard the shots.

“And my husband sleeps on the couch, and he was watching TV, and I thought it was on the TV. And I just heard, like four pop- pop, pop, pop, pop. Like that. And I thought, ‘that’s strange,’” she said.

A number of other neighbours CTV News spoke with did not wish to go on record, fearing for their own safety. They all commented that police have often been seen at the unit at the centre of the investigation.

“Two and a half weeks ago they were here doing a surveillance, so I sort of figured something’s going on,” said Allender.

LPS investigators called it a “targeted shooting.”

It marks the 22nd shooting incident in London this year.

LPS issued the following email to CTV News in response to a question about shooting incidents involving buildings and homes.

“This information forms part of the ongoing investigations. Generally, shootings targeting buildings can be attempts to intimidate or send a message. Each of the reported instances require thorough investigations to determine the motive,” their statement said.

Police also said the investigation has been assumed by the LPS Major Crime Unit.

But as long as there’s an unknown shooter at large, some neighbours say they won’t rest easy.

“Like we’re a medium sized city. I didn’t think it was that violent. But I guess … I guess it is,” surmised Allender.

“I’ve been trying to feel safe here,” said Causley. “I did until I heard that.”
