Local educator, Chrisoula Van Oirschot, expresses the importance of youth mental health.

A London-based educator is celebrating her 50th birthday in a truly inspiring way: by running 50 kilometers to raise $50,000 in support of Vanier Children’s Mental Wellness.

As an educator, Chrisoula Van Oirschot said she knows firsthand how many children struggle with their mental health.

“Every single day in all our schools, across every school, students are struggling with their mental health and their resources are limited,” said Van Oirschot.

“I just thought if we could do something to bring awareness to this issue, $50,000 is just a drop in the bucket.”

The vice principal at St. John’s Catholic French Immersion School in London said she is determined to make a difference by turning this milestone birthday into a mission for hope and healing.

The money raised will go towards creating a new program within Vanier called “Development Acceptance Social Skills and Health (DASSH)”, designed for youth in the London-Middlesex area.
