Mosquito trapped in Corunna tests positive for West Nile Virus

Mosquitos caught in a trap in Corunna have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

According to Lambton Public Health, the mosquito was collected in a trap on August 27, and marks the first such positive test this year in Lambton County.

Data from Public Health Ontario confirms that 21 cases of West Nile Virus have been detected in humans in the province so far in 2025.

West Nile Virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. You can take precautions to reduce your risk of exposure by:

• avoiding areas with high mosquito populations
• wearing protective light coloured clothing or deet based bug repellent
• reducing mosquito breeding areas by disposing of areas of standing water

Most that contract West Nile Virus do not get sick, and those that do become ill largely experience flu-like symptoms. Less than one percent of those exposed to West Nile will become seriously ill.
