A sentencing hearing took place in a London courthouse for Jose Lopes-Cajina after he stabbed a man in London in March 2023.

Jose Lopes-Cajina, 29, was arrested in March of 2023 after a London driver stopped at the railway crossing on Richmond Street near Oxford Street was stabbed several times suffering critical injuries.

At the time of the attack, the court was told that Lopes-Cajina was looking for a way home to Toronto.

The older man who was stabbed in the chest spent 10 days in hospital recovering.

The court has heard that at the time of the offence, Lopes-Cajina may have been struggling with mental health issues and an earlier sentencing date was delayed until Wednesday morning.

Originally charged with attempted murder, last April he pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of aggravated assault.

In his submissions, Crown attorney James Spangenberg asked that Lopes-Cajina receive a 10 year prison sentence.

His defence lawyer Keli Mersereau asked the judge for a sentence of five to six years along with credit for time already served in custody.

The matter has been put over to April 17 when a sentencing date is expected to be set by Justice George Orsini.
