Students craft wreaths for Remembrance Day Ceremony at Vimy Ridge Park

Along with local veterans, students took part in wreath-making ahead of Remembrance Day. CTV London's Lauren Stallone was there.

11 hand-crafted wreaths were thoughtfully placed Saturday morning during the annual Remembrance Day Service at Vimy Ridge Memorial Park in London.

“It makes me proud, really proud,” said one student.

Students from 11 elementary schools across the city came together to create the wreaths.

“We involve the children in not only decorating their own wreaths in the classroom as they are learning about Remembrance Day,” said Deputy Mayor Shawn Lewis. “But then actively participate in laying the wreaths themselves, escorted by cadets.”

Organizers explained it’s a chance for students to learn the importance of honouring those who served our country, with veterans and Legion representatives all in attendance.

“I think it’s important that we keep that experience alive, that we remember the sacrifices that Canadians have made, for several generations in protecting freedom and democracy,” said Lewis.

“I wanted to remember all the soldiers that fought in war and the people that fought for our life,” said one student.

Each arrangement was wrapped in green fabric and decorated with poppies, a personal touch from the students who created them.

“I think that sort of collaboration and in-classroom learning before a ceremony really brings it all together for them,” said Lewis.

The service ended with students and parents leaving behind poppies at the memorial, a final gesture of respect.
