One person has died after a pedestrian and a freight train collided east of Thamesford, Ontario.
Police have not released the time at which the incident occurred, but area residents saw flashing lights before sunrise.
The CP freight train was stopped most of the morning as OPP forensic investigators searched the tracks for clues.
Those who live nearby expressed shock at the incident.
While police have yet to determine the circumstances of the collision, some residents said it serves as a reminder of the dangers of rural railway tracks.
“It definitely got a bit light on the end of that train. You should see it coming,” said Grant Howe.
“Pretty rural area, you learn train safety as a kid, I would hope people don’t want to be out there. It’s a dangerous place,” he added.
Police are asking for public assistance in their investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Oxford OPP at 1 (888) 310-1122.
